The surprising stress of Time Freedom

Hello Reader,

I hope you’re enjoying a long holiday weekend.

Is the summer giving you time for the nagging feeling of, is this it?

Or are you finding it hard to unplug — without guilt or worry?

The traditional playbook of success doesn’t account for fulfillment, existential angst, creative inspiration and – most importantly – feeling a deep sense of aliveness.

It doesn’t solve for a life well-lived.

If you're ready to rewrite your success playbook, we’ve created a unique coaching experience where you’ll explore deep, introspective and provocative questions with me and 5 other Post-Achievement Professionals.

🎧 In this week's podcast, we ask: What do we get wrong about happiness?

The surprising stress of "Time Freedom"

I used to be a very busy boy.

Jacked up on Dunkin' Donuts Hazelnut coffee and a mini-fridge full of Diet Coke, I would plow through jam-packed days.

I dug up an old calendar.

5:30 am wake up. Double breakfast. A hard Crossfit workout on 6 hours of sleep.

Meetings galore. And usually a work-related dinner.

Rinse. Lather. And repeat.

I'm exhausted just looking at that schedule.

Thankfully, things have changed.

I've had full time freedom since 2015.

But it's not all that it's cracked up to be.

Selfish

4 minutes | Of Dollars and Data

Selfies. TikToks. Influencers. (Ahem, Thought Leaders.) Thanks to social media, it’s never been easier to have a personal brand. And it’s never been easier to be selfish. But there’s so much more to life. If it’s all about you, you’re missing the bigger picture.

Social-media influencers aren’t getting rich

3 minutes | Wall Street Journal

An influencer’s job often looks sublime: flexible schedule, creative work and lots of travel (paid for by sponsors). But with a reliance on “the algorithm”, changing audience tastes and the absence of PTO/subsidized healthcare, life can be challenging. Despite pictures on (often rented) yachts and private jets, many social media stars are living paycheck to paycheck.

Finding worth among the echoes

14 minutes | Longreads

Every person has a different definition of “success.” To some, it’s salary, title and prestige. To others, it’s simply creating the perfect hip-hop beat or getting the perfect finish on a piece of wood. The hard part? Figuring out what true success means to you.

Hi Reader, Happy Labor Day weekend! If you're at the US Open, I hope you're enjoying those Honey Deuces (which btw generate $10mm in sales). A friend with a great finance job recently told me: “I’m the type of tired that a vacation doesn’t fix.” He'd gotten to the point in his career where he had a reasonable boss, a team that delivered and could sleep 7 hours a night. But it wasn't that kind of tired. "My soul is tired." I know there are a lot of tired souls reading this. Maybe it's the lack...
